When it comes to mascara, Emily Amick, a popular makeup artist in New York City, is a total drug girl. “I’m not a fan of luxury mascara,” she said. And though she’s tried many premium mascaras, none have been better than the drugstore staple she trusts.
“The formulas are almost the same,” says Amick. “You can find a good mascara at the drugstore just as you can get it from Dior or anywhere. I don’t put too much faith in any major claims a mascara makes—like it does. I have to do what it does. I have more of the higher-end ones, but that’s because they’re sent to me in PR packages. If I run out and I’m spending money on mascara, I’ll go to the store. medicine.”
The biggest difference comes down to your desired effect—do you want length or volume? Waterproof or regular? All the options you need can be found at your local drugstore and it won’t cost you a penny over $15.
“I’m perfectly satisfied with a drugstore mascara,” says Amick. “I use them regularly for myself and I always use them for clients and I’ve never had any complaints.”

It’s really as good as anything I’ve found.” It’s designed to provide both volume and length and comes in four colors — black, tan black, darkest black, and mystic black.
Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express — $10.00
Amick says, “I’ve been using this mascara lately—and I haven’t literally used it since high school, but Maybelline sent it to me as a pack and I’m impressed with it. “I stopped buying it as a teenager and then I thought ‘hmm, I’ll just use this.’ And I think it’s great. It has more wet formulations, so if you want to take your time and build it up to get the definition, it’s a bit better than the evaporated, drying formulas. It comes in classic black and glamorous black.
L’Oréal Volum Original — $11.00
“I trust anything L’Oréal does when it comes to mascara. They are really that good [as luxury products],” said Amick. And this brand’s OG mascara is one of her must-haves. Additionally, it is available in seven shades—blackest, black, sepia, cobalt blue, dark burgundy, dark purple, and dark green.
