MANILA, Philippines—Alex Eala gears up for her professional Grand Slam debut next month.

Eala has qualified for the Australian Open tennis tournament next January in Melbourne.

Eala announced her Australian Open entry on Facebook on Wednesday.

“YESSSSSS!!!! I made it to the Qualifiers of the 2023 Australian Open in Melbourne! This will be my first match at the professional level of a Grand Slam,” Eala wrote.

The 17-year-old Filipino is ranked 215 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which is the basis for her eligibility.

Eala is looking for the main draw this time after she got out of the second round of the qualifiers in W100 Shrewsbury last October.

She is the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam singles title after defeating world number three Lucie Havlickova of the Czech Republic in the final of the 2022 US Open in September.
