NEW DELHI: Tata Sons has put its power after respawning Indian Airlines (AI), which it purchased earlier this year. Companies from different groups are using their core competencies to revive Maharaja in what is considered the most challenging aviation change in modern times. For example, the flight branch of Taj Hotels TajSATS returned home from AI Day One this January, offering improved in-flight meals.
AI MD & CEO Campbell Wilson has now detailed the role other Tata companies play in AI’s turnaround. “TajSATS is helping a lot with catering here. For the crew accommodation, (yes) Hotel India Company (Taj). Tata Technologies helped design some of the engine seat parts. obsolete or out of stock or other parts in the plane (by) doing the 3D design and manufacturing from scratch so we can accelerate seat repairs,” said Wilson (52), a veteran Airborne soldiers from Tatas‘longtime reliable airline partner Singapore Airlines (SIA), said.
Broken, torn, or non-functional business seats are taboo for passengers using AI, especially on wide-body seats used for medium to ultra-long flights. And spare parts are not easy to find, which makes 3D production extremely important. “In some cases, we have difficulty sourcing some parts because the chair product is quite old and in some cases is no longer manufactured. Then you run into chain constraints. supply that every industry is facing… The design of many of these components is not as sturdy as today’s chairs, so we can fix a chair today and in a month’s time , the same problem could recur. We’re building up our supply of parts to continue fixing things that keep breaking,” Wilson said.
Tata Group’s flagship TCS is a “significant contributor” to rebuilding the AI backbone. A team from Tata Business Excellence, consisting of representatives from most of the group’s companies that specialize in business analytics to improve individual company performance, was at AI “helping us determine where to go opportunities for improvement and efficiency”.
Air India is acquiring the expertise of each company in the group depending on the strength of each company.
