Amazon supports and publishes new Tomb Raider with Crystal Dynamics
Amazon Games has signed an agreement with Crystal Dynamics to support the development and publishing of the next major Tomb Raider game made in Unreal Engine 5.
The companies announced the partnership today, December 15, saying that they “have reached an agreement under which Crystal Dynamics will develop a new cross-platform Tomb Raider title, with Amazon Games providing provide full support and publish the game globally.”
The game in question is the next generation Tomb Raider announced in April 2022. crystal dynamics, purchased by Embracer Corporation in Augustnote that the acquisition has enabled more unique publishing deals, such as the one with Amazon.
“Crystal Dynamics has an extraordinary opportunity following our acquisition of Embracer to redefine what the publishing relationship for Tomb Raider is all about,” said Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos.
“Conversion is what we were looking for, and with Amazon Games we found a team that shares our creative vision, ambition, and values for a Lara Croft universe across multiple possibilities. They is uniquely positioned to rewrite publishing and co-development, and we’re excited to forge this new path together, starting with building the biggest and best Tomb Raider game yet.”
A relatively vague description of the new game was also shared, although it basically matches what players expect from Crystal Dynamics’ next game. “The new unnamed Tomb Raider game is a narrative-driven, single-player adventure that continues the story of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series.
“It encompasses all of the elements that have made Tomb Raider one of the most respected franchises in the game, allowing players to control the confident and multi-dimensional hero Lara Croft in an environment that encourages Creative exploration and pathfinding, with challenging puzzles to solve, and a variety of enemies to face and overcome.
“Crystal Dynamics is drawing on the power and cutting-edge technology of Unreal Engine 5 to take storytelling to the next level, in the largest, most expansive Tomb Raider game to date. The title is currently in its infancy. Initial development and additional details will be announced later.”
Little has been said about the game, and since it’s still in early development, it may be a while before Crystal Dynamics, Embracer, or Amazon Games share more.
