At least 27 killed in Colombia landslide: President
BOGOTA: At least 27 people were killed when a landslide engulfed a road in the northwest Colombialocking people in buses and other vehicles, the president said Oil and Gas Gustavo in Monday.
“I am saddened to announce that, to date, 27 people, including three minors, have been killed in this tragedy” that occurred Sunday in a remote area of the city of Pueblo Rico, Mr. Petro wrote on Twitter.
On Sunday night, the president reported three deaths, as dozens of rescuers searched for survivors.
One survivor said the bus driver managed to avoid the worst of the landslide.
“Part of it was going down and the bus was backing up a bit from there. The bus driver was backing up when it all collapsed,” Andres Ibarguen told Lloro Stereo radio.
Civil defense officials said the bus departed from Cali with 25 passengers.
According to the government, the rainy season that begins in August is Colombia’s worst rainy season in 40 years, causing accidents that have killed more than 270 people.
