Boat carrying Haitian migrants sinks off Bahamas, killing 17

MEXICO CITY: A boat carrying Haitian migrants appears to have capsized Bahamas Early Sunday, and Bahamian security forces recovered the bodies of 17 people and rescued 25 others, authorities said.
It is not clear if anyone is missing after the boat sank about seven miles from New Providence.
Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis said in a statement that the dead included 15 women, a man and an infant. He said the rescued people were taken to observe by medical staff.
Davis said investigators have determined that a twin-engine speedboat left the Bahamas at around 1 a.m. carrying 60 people, apparently bound for Miami.
Davis said a criminal investigation has begun into the suspected human-smuggling activity.
“I would like to convey the condolences of the government and the people of the Bahamas to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy,” Davis said. “My government, from the moment it came to power, has warned against these dangerous journeys.”
Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he sympathizes with the parents of the victims.
“This new TV series has left the whole nation grieving,” he said. “Once again, I launch a call for national reconciliation to solve the problems that are separating us from our country, our brothers, our children.”
A year after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse last July, gang violence had worsened and Haiti was in a free fall that sent the economy plummeting.
