Ganjam:
A 22-year-old engineering student was arrested Wednesday for the death of a four-year-old boy in Odisha’s Ganjam district, police said.
The boy was found in a pool of blood on a neighbor’s rooftop on Tuesday.
According to preliminary investigation, the engineering student sexually assaulted the male student and was afraid of being arrested, so he used the iron door of the house under construction to hit the boy on the head, a police officer said.
The defendant fled the area after the incident and he was arrested near Aska, SDPO Uma Shankar Singh said.
He said the exact cause of death could only be determined after receiving the autopsy report.
The case came to light after the victim’s parents could not find their son in the house for hours and then discovered him in a pool of blood on a neighbor’s rooftop. He was taken to a community health center in Dharakote, where doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, human rights activist Rabindra Mishra has called on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to direct the state government to take strict action against the defendant and to pay Rs 20 crore to the victim’s parents.
