About the Southeast Conference
Pioneering the integration of higher education and athletic competition, the Southeast Conference is a leader in the national landscape of intercollegiate athletics in the 21st century. Since its founding in 1933, the SEC achieved stature and stability by assigning executive/voting power to the presidents of member organizations. These university leaders determine conference policies, and for many years this participation has been a major source of strength in the development of the SEC. Throughout its history, the SEC has provided leadership on the key issues facing competition among universities. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt have been in the SEC since its founding in 1933. The federation has expanded twice, adding Arkansas and South Carolina in 1991, followed by Missouri and Texas A&M in 2012.
