I love big, bouncy curls, but it’s not a must-do to get them. Curling iron works but doesn’t fit, I like my Dyson AirWrap but find it too cumbersome for everyday use and I don’t have the expert-level hand-eye coordination that flat irons have need to be achieved. My new favorite solution to this beauty conundrum? AirTwist from Chi, gives me perfect curls without any of the hassles of its predecessors.
Chi AirTwist ($109) is basically a curling iron, a flat iron, and an all-in-one dryer. It has two fixing plates (flat irons) shaped like a barrel (curler) and equipped with vents to deliver cool air into your strands (hair dryer).
To use, start by placing a section of hair between the plates, then stroke from root to tip. Once you’ve run out of hair, wrap the same section around the barrel. curling iron. Then press the “cool shot” button and you will hear the fan start to chime. It’s the sound of your hair being blown to style before you blow it out to reveal bouncy and flawless curls.
In typical Chi style, the hot plates on the AirTwist generate negative ions as it heats up. “These ions will seal the cuticles of the hair, eliminate frizz and protect [the hair’s] Jamila Powell, founder of Natural Drenched hair care line and owner of Maggie Rose Salon.
Hairstylist Ashley Rubell explains that the cool snap helps keep the hairstyle in place. “Cool air is used to literally cool the hair and lock that manipulated new style into place,” she says. “Not only does it seal the cuticle of the hair shaft, but it can also provide a smooth, shiny finish.”
Having the option to capture your curls in a cool way is one of the many reasons why the Dyson AirWrap is so popular. That little tip helps you get a shiny hairstyle that lasts longer. But AirWrap comes with a slightly steeper learning curve, and it’s actually $600. Chi AirTwist costs one-sixth and while it can’t make “fresh from the salon” like AirWrap, if you’re in the market for long-lasting, easy-to-get curls, it really does. Perfection.
