Christmas Eve shooting at UK pub leaves 1 dead, 3 wounded

A Christmas Eve shooting at a pub in northwest England has killed a young woman and wounded three men, police said on Sunday.
The Merseyside Police said it was investigating the shooting at 11:50 p.m. Saturday at the Lighthouse pub in town Wallasey like a murder case. Police have not arrested any suspects.
“This investigation is in its early stages and we understand that this is a truly shocking and devastating incident that took place just before Christmas Day in a crowded venue filled with young people,” the Chief Executive Officer said. Inspector David McCaughrean said.
The woman died at the hospital “with a wound resembling a gunshot wound,” the police force said in a statement. According to the statement, in addition to the three injured men, several others were also injured.
McCaughrean said investigators are looking for witnesses as well as cell phone video and closed-circuit television footage to find out what happened.
“We believe the gunman left the pub car park in a dark vehicle, possibly a dark vehicle. Mercedes immediately after the shooting, and we’d love to hear from anyone who sees this to contact us immediately,” he said.
The pastor of a nearby church told Britain’s Press Association news agency that the shooting would shock local residents because of the pub’s location.
“We have a lot of young people, families in that area. The lighthouse is the heart of that community,” Jeffrey Hughesminister of the United Reformed Church, said.
Hughes said his church’s Christmas morning service will not “be as celebrated as planned” because of the sad news.
The violence “shows us that although we celebrate Christmas, we are still very far from ideals (of peace) as a society,” he told PA.
Gun violence is relatively rare in the UK, where most police do not carry guns.
A deadly shooting at a pub in eastern England on Friday night has resulted in the arrest of a 44-year-old man, the Essex police force said.
Police said the suspect was charged with murder, possession of an assault weapon in public and possession of a bladed item in public following the death of another man at the Lamb and Lion pub in London. Westcliff-on-Sea.
