Come June next year, movement of coal to North India power plants to be faster | India News

New Delhi: Movement of coal arrive electric Factory in North India, including in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, will be smoother and faster from next June with Dedicated freight corridor to the East (EDFC) is being completed.
The states are located at the other end of the coal-fired zones, and trains take days to deliver coal to power plants located in the region.
“EDFC, for the awarded works from Sonnagar in West Bengal to Ludhiana in Punjab, will be 100% complete by June 2023. We will be over 90% complete for both Eastern and Western DFC in next year,” said Ravindra Kumar Jain, Managing Director of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC).
Jain said the shipment of coal from eastern India to the northern states will be faster with the entire EDFC set to be operational before the monsoon next year. “We can run freight trains at about 55-65 km/h faster and will be able to get coal to power plants in Punjab, Haryana and UP quickly. We can run longer trains with more cargo. EDFC will run about 100 trains per day and WDFC can take 125-150 trains per day,” Jain said.
The DFCC director said it recently operated a freight train from Rewari in Haryana to Palanpur in Gujarat in 10 hours and did not change the crew. Under normal circumstances, freight trains would travel all the way in 24-36 hours and this would require three crew changes.
So far 1,283 km of the two DFCs have been completed and another 70 km will be operational in the next few months. The combined length of the two corridors where work has begun is 2,840 km.
Jain said the only major pain point in the WDFC project was the stretch of road between Vaitarna and Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai. This will take a long time due to land and environmental issues. The DFCC has yet to receive land in patches totaling about 3 kilometers in length, while the recent order of Pune’s bench National Green Court on land has adversely affected the sourcing of this important raw material.
