Discover the role of Vitamin D in the long-term COVID!

Studies have shown it affects 50-70% of patients previously hospitalized for COVID-19, however little is known about this condition. A risk factor for worse outcomes for hospitalized COVID-19 patients, such as intubation and mechanical ventilation or death, is low vitamin D levels, but its role in COVID elongation has not yet been fully studied.

Link Revealed: Prolonged Vitamin D Deficiency and COVID

For this study, with support from Abiogen Pharma SpA, researchers from Vita-Salute University San Raffaele and IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan examined 100 patients aged 51-70 years, with and without prolonged illness with COVID.

They measured their vitamin D levels when they were first hospitalized for COVID-19 and six months after discharge, and found lower vitamin D levels in patients with persistent COVID compared to those who did not.

This result was more pronounced in patients who experienced symptoms of ‘brain fog’, such as confusion, forgetfulness and poor concentration, after 6 months of follow-up.

The researchers included patients without any skeletal conditions and only those hospitalized for COVID-19 who were not in intensive care units (ICUs).

They compared the two groups, with and without persistent COVID, for age, sex, pre-existing chronic illnesses, and severity of COVID-19.

Shortcomings lead to vulnerability: Understanding the impact

Lead investigator Professor Andrea Giustina said: “Previous studies on the role of vitamin D in long-term COVID-19 have been inconclusive mainly due to multiple confounding factors. “The highly controlled nature of our study helps us better understand the role of vitamin D deficiency in the case of persistent COVID and establish that there is likely a link between vitamin D deficiency D and prolonged COVID.”

While Professor Giustina acknowledges that larger studies are needed to confirm this link, he and his team are currently focusing on understanding whether vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk of prolonged COVID.

“Our study shows that COVID-19 patients with low vitamin D levels are more likely to have persistent COVID, but it is not known whether vitamin D supplementation can improve symptoms or reduce this risk altogether. Are not.”
