To tell Southwest Airlines there is a Bad week on the public relations front would be an understatement. Customers are seething after the airline suffered widespread flight cancellations after a major winter storm disrupted holiday travel across the country. far ahead of the industry competitors. Southwest has been canceled or more two thirds of flights every day since Monday, while peers have canceled only about 2% due to inclement weather.
Rival airlines were unwilling to take a potential PR black eye, as customers looking for alternative routes took to social media to complain about high prices from other airlines on routes affected by the Southwest Crisis. Now, Great Southwest Crisis of 2022 did the unthinkable: Ask the capitalist airlines to set price ceilings on some of the affected routes and pity all stranded passengers.
Reacting to the moves, Transport Minister Pete Buttigieg tweeted on Tuesday night, “As travelers seek to rebook due to Southwest flight cancellations, other airlines should limit fares on these routes to help those who need to get home.” Note that United and American Airlines Buttigieg added: “I am pleased to see that a number of airlines have now committed to taking this step—they should all be.”
The complaints below his tweet allude to the level of frustration of airline passengers. a tourist tweeted on Wednesday, “@AmericanAir doesn’t care. They are price-cutting villains.”
The American responded by tweeting, “We’re doing our part to help get people where they need to go, and we’re putting fare limits in place for some cities.”
Asset contacted the American but did not receive an immediate reply. Ministry of Transport, when contacted by Asset, pointing to Buttigieg’s third tweet. The agency will conduct exploration into why Southwest has such problems.
In another scathing comment, a tourist tweeted on Tuesday“This is illegal… I’m on a canceled @SouthwestAir flight so I’m trying to rebook some things so I can go home this year (literally…no southwest flights until May). 1) and today’s flights are TWO Thousand Dollars ONE-WAY?!? !?”
She shared screenshots of fares from various airlines exceeding $2,000 for a one-way flight between San Diego and Orlando.
Other users answered“This is absolutely disgusting and unethical on so many levels.”
United replied Asset: “We continue to get people to their destinations as safely and as quickly as possible during this busy holiday season, and our latest effort includes fare caps in some cities to reduce fares. making sure our flights are available to as many customers as possible.”
Southwest shared a statement to Asset read in part: “While Southwest will resume operations about a third of its schedule on Thursday, December 29, we plan to return to normal operations with minimal disruption on Friday, December 30th…We know even our deepest apologies – to our Customers, to our Employees, and to everyone affected by this disruption – only go so far than.”
It points to one “travel disruption” website where customers can submit claims and refunds for alternative meals, hotels and transportation, as well as get help finding lost luggage.
But, take note Cowen Inc. analyst Helane Becker. in a Bloomberg TV channel interview Fourth, Southwest has been warned for years about its outdated technology, which should have been updated well before this month’s storm.
“People have a right to be really angry and upset,” says Becker. “They should have invested in these systems years ago, but they didn’t.”
