Parliament adjourned two weeks of recess last week without voting on the packagewill provide additional funding for treatments, tests and vaccines.

Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said on “Fox News Sunday”: “We need this Covid funding. “And it’s really a big disappointment to us that Congress has gone two weeks without passing this into law.”

A small increase in coronavirus cases has swept through Washington’s corridors over the past week. Dozens of positive resultsincluding some administrative officials and members of Congress, after attending the Gridiron Club and Foundation’s annual dinner on April 2.

President Biden did not attend the dinner, but his sister, who has tested positive; Mr. Biden appeared, not covering his face, at several public events last week, raising concerns about whether he may have contracted the virus.

On Sunday, Dr Fauci defended the procedures taken to protect the president.

“He is fully vaccinated,” Dr. Fauci said. “He has doubledand most of the time, people who get close to him need to be checked. So we feel the protocol is a logical one.”

Fauci stressed that the severity of a coronavirus infection should not be mitigated, which can still lead to severe illness and long time covid, even if they do not lead to hospitalization. However, he said, people need to make their own decisions about what risks they are willing to take.

“This will not be eliminated, and it will not be eliminated,” he said. “And what’s going to happen is that we’re going to see that each individual is going to have to calculate how much risk they want to accept when dining indoors and when going to activities.”
