‘Dream come true for 170 million people of Bangladesh’: PM Hasina inaugurates Padma Bridge
DHAKA (BANGLADESH): Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the country’s new landmark multi-purpose building’Padma Bridge‘on Saturday.
This is the longest bridge in Bangladesh which will greatly reduce the distance between Dhaka capital and Mongla Sea Portimportant for regional and international trade.
“Completing the Padma Bridge is a dream come true for 170 million Bangladeshis. It is a unique Bangladesh Government infrastructure initiative led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” said Bangladesh government. told ANI.

After forming the government in 2009, Prime Minister Hasina faced a setback when World Bank canceled a $1.2 billion loan on the grounds of corruption and canceled a loan to build the Padma Bridge. Although a Canadian court later dismissed the allegation, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) also dropped the project completely at the time of power. Hasina’s is weakening.
“Construction was actually delayed due to allegations of wrongdoing and a corrupt conspiracy brought by the World Bank, the main sponsor of the project along with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Islamic Development (IDB) and Japan,” a Bangladesh PMO official said.
“This is a major project of Bangladesh fully funded by the Government of Bangladesh. With the construction of the Padma bridge, the Bangladeshi government set an example for other countries in South Asia by building the bridge with its own money. This will certainly encourage other countries in the future to develop good regional connectivity by undertaking more projects like this.”
The government says the Padma Bridge is the pride of the nation, connecting the southwestern region of the country in Bangladesh with the rest of the country. The bridge has reduced the distance between Dhaka and Mongla seaport, which is important for international and regional trade. The mainland port of Benapole and the seaport of Payra will also benefit from the construction of the Padma Bridge.
“The main geographical barrier has finally been removed and more importantly, the backward Southwest region in Bangladesh is now linked to the rest of the country. In fact, it has connected 21 districts of the region. Southwestern Bangladesh with Dhaka and the rest of the country,” said the Bangladesh government.
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge is ranked 122nd longest in the world. The main bridge is 6.15 km long while the railway viaduct is 0.532 km long.
The bridge spans a total of 10,642 km with 41 spans and 42 piers. The distance between the pillars is 150 m with a depth of 128 m, this is the deepest pile in the world. The bridge is 6.15 km long, started construction in 2015, the last span is built in December 2021.
