Earthfoam Mattress Review: Editors Test 2023
As a quintessential Taurus, sleep is often paramount to my health. But recently after learning I was pregnant with my first child, my need for sleep was particularly hard on me. I can say with confidence that I’ve spent more time in bed than most people over the past few months.
As someone who has spent most of my decades-long career working for ethical and eco-friendly businesses, I have slowly moved into brands and products that align with our values. that when possible. When it came time to retire my traditional spring mattress, I knew an eco-friendly model would be on the sustainable swap list. My first choice? Earthfoam, a soft, fluffy, green mattress that grows on trees.
No, Earthfoam doesn’t actually have an orchard that grows into a mattress (though that would be great). Instead, Earthfoam mattresses are made from the sap of the Sri Lankan rubber tree, or natural latex, to give them their characteristic bounce. In a saturated, often misunderstood category, the eco-friendly sleep brand holds its products to serious sustainability standards, ensuring sleepers like me get a good night’s sleep and restore health from night to night.
And it was. After two months of sleeping on an Earthfoam mattress, I can honestly say it’s a serious upgrade over my old mattress in every way, keeping me comfortable and supported throughout the first trimester. . Read on for my full review, below.
Earthfoam Mattress: My Full Review
How it shipped
Although DTC mattress brands have been around for a while, this was my first foray into this online shopping category. My first thought was, “How the hell did this get to me?” And when it arrived just a few days later, my second question was, “How do I open this?”
After not finding anything online, I contacted Earthfoam’s customer service team who promptly responded to my questions, directing me to use second person assistance to move around. move the box to the bedroom, open the box, then cut off the compression wrap (which is paper, btw) that’s securing the queen size mattress. I enlisted the help of my co-tester, my husband, and after overcoming my fear that it might pop out like a crescent-shaped box of cake (it wasn’t nearly as dramatic as we expected it to be). ), it quickly opens and expands all the way. thickness. Since the customer service team had secured it, we were able to sleep on the mattress right after. I will note that there is a slight scent upon opening it which we were told can occur due to natural rubber. But it dissipates quickly and is not irritating, even for my sensitive pregnant nose.
Although I’ve only been testing it for about two months, I appreciate that Earthfoam offers a 100-night trial for mattresses and covers and a 10-year warranty on the mattress, plus free shipping to the United States. Contiguous and non-return questions are free of charge. (Note: Brands ship to Hawaii, Alaska and outside the US, but the customer is responsible for all shipping costs including tariffs and duties if applicable.)
How do you feel
Earthfoam has two hardness levels to choose from: Medium and Firm. My husband and I chose the “Medium” and found it firmer than the “average” hard bed we’ve had before. If you’re someone who definitely likes your mattress to feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud, this mattress might not be your choice (although your doctor may suggest otherwise.)
Overall, my husband and I both feel that even though it’s firmer than before, it’s very supportive, especially our lower back, spine and hips (which has become more important as we grow older). I age with the years and as I navigate pregnancy).
How it sleeps
When my husband first heard about the Earthfoam mattress, my husband was skeptical because he had heard that the foam mattress was hot and he was worried that it wouldn’t be cool enough for him. However, similar to clothing made from natural versus synthetic fibers, mattresses do a great job of regulating our body temperature and Southern California’s variable weather.
Each mattress has 5 layers of velvet, two of which (base and first layer) are made from natural rubber. The third is an organic wool layer to ensure thermoregulation, while also acting as a natural flame retardant. On top that thing is an organic cotton fabric that holds everything together and protects it from abrasion. And on top of that, it’s an organic cotton side, which is cool to the touch and keeps my husband from night sweats.
Sustainability
From a sustainability perspective, Earthfoam ticks most of the boxes. The materials alone as well as the supply chain are impressive, including Fair Trade sourcing from Sri Lanka, ethical sourcing from New Zealand and fair labor at a family-run factory. operating in Illinois. Each of these claims is supported by six different third-party certifications, including the Fair For Life fair trade certification and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification. As mentioned, mattresses and covers are wrapped in compressed paper, while pillows are shipped in biodegradable bags. And products are long-lasting, an important part of the sustainability equation. According to the brand, natural foam rubber is renowned for its durability and the mattress is tested to last 3 times longer than most other mattresses, ensuring you invest in a product that is built to last. permanent and not buried.
Value
If you’ve come this far, you’re probably thinking, “Okay, but how much does this cost?” If you’ve ever bought a mattress, you might have been as shocked as I was when I was first asked to buy this adult mattress. Add in the words “organic” and “fair trade” and suspense can be built.
That said, when comparing other popular direct-to-consumer mattress brands, I find Earthfoam prices comparable. The mattress comes in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes and ranges from $699 – $1,499 depending on which size you purchase. If you’re not ready to buy a full mattress but are curious, the brand also offers a mattress cover ($299-$399) in a variety of sizes and a pillow ($99), which cuts down on the money in your budget. your bank account.
Tl;Dr
I will summarize my review best in my husband’s words. The morning after our first night with the Earthfoam Organic mattress, I woke up to find him staggered saying, “This mattress is so comfortable.” Well people, yes you have it. The skeptic, hot sleeper, and pregnant, sustainability-loving partner all agree that this mattress is a solid win for our bedroom. Here’s hoping our soon-to-be baby can give us a good night’s sleep like our Earthfoam mattress.
