The troubling details emerged after the release of a revised autopsy report on the death of Elijah McClain — a 23-year-old black man who died in police custody in 2019 — as one Denver coroner added, “complications of ketamine administration following coercive restraint.”
Coroner Stephen Cina’s updated autopsy results on McClain, were revised in July 2021 but released until Friday after a Denver District Court judge approved the employee’s emergency motion investigate, follow CNN.
For three years, the initial report only listed his death as “unknown”, without specifying whether his cause of death was natural, accidental or a homicide.

In August 2019, police answered a call about a “suspicious person”.
That person ended up being McClain, who was wearing a black ski mask at the time he was held around his neck and injected with ketamine after buying iced tea at a nearby corner shop.

He was given medication again after being restrained, and ended up having a heart attack on the way to the hospital.
Three days later, he was declared brain dead.
Coroner Update Autopsy Report: McClain “Will Still Be Alive” If Ketamine Not Administered
According to CNN.
“Simply put, this dose of ketamine was too much for this individual, and it resulted in an overdose, even though blood ketamine levels were consistent with ‘therapeutic’ concentrations,” Cina wrote. that Mr. McClain will most likely be alive but because of the use of ketamine.”
The changes were reportedly made after the coroner’s office received “body camera footage, witness statements and additional records that were part of the grand jury investigation or were available upon examination. the initial post-mortem was performed”.

Body Footage Shows McClain’s Final Moments As He Begs For His Life While The Officer Detains Him
Full body camera footage obtained by 9 News was previously leaked to the public, showing McClain grappling with officers who told them he was “an introvert” and that he was going home, when he begged the police to stop.
“Relax or I will have to change this situation,” one of the officers said. “We don’t want to do this…. Now stop fighting or you will be misled. “
McClain himself can be heard apologizing to the officers and telling them he couldn’t “breathe properly” as he vomited from the pressure on his neck and chest.
Although the update to McClain’s autopsy report provides some more clarity to his family on the nature of his death, the exact matter in which McClain died is still listed as “unknown” identified”, although the autopsy report was updated.

In fact, parts of the new report are all in favor of responding police officers, with Cina writing that he “sees no evidence that police injuries contributed to the death of the police officer.” he).”

Since his death, there have been numerous demonstrations and protests against Black Lives Matter on behalf of McClain.
