Epic shuts down online services for some bogus rock band and league titles, among other things

in one blog post, Epic has announced that it will be shutting down servers and online services for many older titles starting today. The reason is that the company wants to, in its own words, “move to support only Epic Online Services with a unified friend system, voice chat, parental controls, and verification features of parents”.

Epic announced that as of January 24, the following titles will no longer be playable online (although some caveats have been noted). Epic has also begun removing these titles from digital stores and will be disabling DLC purchases. Most of these games are still playable offline if you own them. The list of affected games is:

  • 1000 tiny claws
  • Vu Trung 1-3 (Dance Central VR online multiplayer will still be available)
  • Green Day: Rock band
  • Monsters (Probably) stole my princess
  • Rock bands 1-3 (Rock Band 4 online multiplayer will still be available)
  • The Beatles: Rock band
  • Rocket-powered aerobatic combat vehicle
  • virtual gold
  • Void II: Awakening
  • Unreal Tournament 2003
  • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • bogus tournament 3 (Epic plans to bring online features through Epic Online Services in the future.)
  • Bogus Tournament: Game of the Year Version

Of course, games with offline mode are still playable, but titles built solely on multiplayer mode will be really dead. An example is free games Battle Breakerwill be completely unplayable on December 30. Epic will refund in-game purchases made in Battle Breakers 180 days prior to today.

Additionally, the publisher has removed the Mac and Linux versions of Hatoful Boyfriend and Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star from stores, as well as the mobile version of Hatoful Boyfriend. DropMix. However, the owner can still access these headers. Unreal Tournament (Alpha), Rock Band Blitz, Rock Band Companion and SingSpace apps will also be shutting down on January 24.

Some of these games are more than a decade old, so it’s not surprising to see Epic shut down on their online servers, especially if the community isn’t as active. However, it is frustrating to see this happening from a conservationist’s point of view. Will you log in online to play Unreal Tournament 2004 or The Beatles: Rock Band with friends before January 24? Let us know in the comments section!
