1. DJ Lagway had the most impressive quarterback performance of Week One.
Harris’ take: TRUTH. Four-star midfielder Willis (Texas) DJ Lagway got a new head coach this season, a coach who has proven to be a strong attacking soul in the Houston area in recent years. Lagway’s debut in his offense is stellar. He made both air and footwork on the way to helping Willis drop more than 70 points in the opening game of the season. The sky is the limit for Lagway, who has all the physical tools to be a top quarterback in this class, but it will come down to combining it consistently in 2022.
Lawyers put: TRUTH. Malachi Nelson completed 22 of 29 passes for 418 yards and five touchdowns in the first half. That’s pretty impressive for five stars USC committed, but that kind of performance against weaker competitors is to be expected for a premium QB. Lagway threw 343 yards and six points and dashed to 102 yards and another – and he’s just started his junior season. 2. Houston has a chance to win the first-place Group of Five title in 2023.
Harris’ take: TRUTH. Houston currently ranked 7th in the Group of 5 in the country as of today, but the way the Cougars recruit top talent, I can see Dana Holgorsen Sneak his way to the top by signing date. Elite defensive targets like Princewill Umanmielen, Jayven Anderson and Jacoby Davis all had Houston high on their list in the fall, while four stars ran again Parker Jenkins launched in 2023. Patterson capture: FICTION. Both programs in the state SMU and Houston have a good chance of finishing 1st in the G5 of the 2023 cycle. But there will be competition from the likes of UCF. The Mustang has many commitments that I appreciate – just like the recipient Jason Lavender, Randy Reece and Jamarion Carroll – and is doing a great job in retaining DFW talent. His athleticism combined with his physicality is poised to compete in the SEC and I see it as a great opportunity to gain rich experience for the four-star soon.
Roser’s death: TRUTH. We’ll see how the next calendar year unfolds with his continued technical development and his college transition. But he’s an exceptional athlete, bursting with his size that I think people are just beginning to recognize. He abused some future college defensive ends in 2021 during his first full-time season for offense at a new school. What lies ahead this fall, on the next level and on the level after that could be really exciting to see.
