fbi: FBI counts 61 ‘active shooter’ incidents last year, up 52% from 2020

The USA experienced 61 “active shootings” last year, a sharp increase in the number of attacks, casualties and geographical distribution compared to 2020 and the highest number in more than 20 years, FBI reported on Monday.
According to the FBI, the 2021 total, spread across 30 states, is 52 percent higher than in 2020 and about double what it was three years earlier. The agency defines an active shooter as someone who engages in murder or attempted murder in a public space in a seemingly random manner.
Commercial businesses accounted for just over half of such incidents last year, which is also notable given the emerging trend of “mobile shooters” opening fire in multiple locations, such as case of a gunman who attacked several spas in the Atlanta area, the FBI said.
The report said last year’s shooting carnage left 103 people dead and 140 injured. In contrast, the FBI counted 40 gun attacks in 19 states that left 38 people dead and 126 injured in 2020, a year that coincided with the peak of restrictions on social and economic life caused by the pandemic. coronavirus pandemic.
Compare that to recent years, which are heavily skewed by data from 2017, the year in which a gunman opened fire at an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas from the window of a high-rise hotel, killing 56 people. lives and hundreds of others were injured in just one incident.
The Las Vegas attack alone helped push 2017’s annual casualty toll – 143 dead and 591 injured – to a record high even though there were only 31 shootings that year, equal to one half the numbers by 2021.
The death toll is as high as last year, which ranks as the seventh deadliest year in active shootings since 2000, the first year the FBI had figures available. However, it marks the largest number of such attacks on record, exceeding only the 40 recorded in 2020.
CaliforniaDespite having some of the nation’s harshest gun laws, shootings occurred more than in any other state last year, six out of 61, followed by Texas and Georgia with five countries, according to the report.
The only fatal incident of 2021 was the mass shooting at Kings Soopers Grocery in Boulder, Colorado, of which 10 victims died. Eight people were killed and seven injured at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis.
The FBI notes that its active shootings report does not include all gun violence or even all mass shootings, which the government identifies as at least three deaths. in one case.
Excluded from the data, the FBI said, are acts of gang or drug-related violence, cases that are strictly defined as family disputes, isolated hostage situations or interference from other agents. other criminal acts.
