French police use tear gas against fans on Champs-Elysees in Paris: Report
PARIS: French police use tear gas to disperse the crowds of fans gathered on the Champs-Elysees in Paris after the defeat of their national team at 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti report on Sunday.
On Sunday, Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties, after drawing 3-3 after extra time, and won the World Cup for the third time.
Police used tear gas to disperse fans on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris as they continued to throw firecrackers at law enforcement, RIA Novosti reported.
Some fans clashed with police officers after they began detaining people involved in the violence.
People gathered on the Champs-Elysees even before the start of the World Cup final. Police blocked traffic at the site and near the Arc de Triomphe.
The Russian agency said thousands of police officers patrolled the French capital on Sunday evening.
Before that, the President of France Emmanuel Macron comforted a French football team apparently distraught after a tense FIFA World Cup final defeat to Argentina led by Lionel Messi on Sunday.
After a painful defeat in a tense penalty shootout, Macron was seen consoling all the players after the 4-2 defeat in the penalty shootout.
