MANILA, Philippines—The Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 Women’s team slipped out of the Fiba Asia Cup after losing to New Zealand, 17-10, in the quarterfinals on Sunday in Singapore.
What looks like a solid start for Gilas, 7-5, is just the harbinger of a changing game run by New Zealand.
The Tall Ferns scrapped a massive 6-0 run for an 11-7 lead that seemed to have removed the teamfight from Gilas.
Janine Pontejos shouldered most of the attacking burden for the Philippines with six points while Afril Bernardo scored three.
Gilas struggled against Sharne Pupuke-Robati, who scored 7 points and 13 rebounds for the Kiwis.
Philippines split its two games in Pool A to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Gilas topped Iran, 16-13, but lost to China, 19-10.
Despite being eliminated, female Gilas still left with the best performance in the tournament.
