Before the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical or Comedy was announced, Carmichael appeared on stage to perform a small monologue in which he berates Tom Cruise Savage.
Appearing with a pile of Golden Globe trophies, the comedian joked that the award belonged to Top Gun: Maverick star, who did not attend the awards and actually returned his three Globes in 2021 amid the HFPA controversy.
In another controversial moment, Carmichael mentioned Cruise’s relationship with Scientology – joking that he would return the trophies “in exchange for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige”.
“Backstage, I found three Golden Globes that Tom Cruise gave back…” he said.
“I thought maybe we could take these three and exchange for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.”
Shelly is the wife of Scientology frontman David Miscavige, who is said to be Cruise’s close friend. She was last seen in public in 2007, and there has long been speculation about her state of health and whereabouts.

The joke elicited laughter and a few gasps from the audience, before it was quickly cut into Top Gun: Maverick stars Glen Powell and Jay Ellis, who presented the Golden Globes to Ozark star Julia Garner.
In her opening monologue, Carmichael took the opportunity to criticize some of her industry colleagues, starting with the HPFA itself.
He took no punches when it came to the organization’s controversial history when he addressed the crowd during his keynote.
“I’m here because I’m black,” Carmichael said in her powerful opening monologue.
“I’m going to wake everyone up in the room. This show, the Golden Globes, didn’t air last year, because of the HFPA – I wouldn’t say they’re a racist organization, but they are. there was not a single Black member until the death of George Floyd.”
He added: “So with that information, what do you do.”

During his speech, Carmichael joked that he had a “racial moral dilemma” when deciding whether he would accept the show’s offer.
He told the crowd of laughing celebrities that he was surprised to receive the call, which happened while he was making tea.
“I was like, oh, one minute you were having mint tea at home, and the next minute you were invited to be the Negro of a white-led organization,” Carmichael said.
“I was only asked to host this show, I know, because I’m Black.”
The Golden Globes host said he took the job “let’s say .” [the HFPA] not changed at all”, but was a bit more lenient in his closing remarks.
Carmichael said he confided in a friend, Avery, who asked how much he was paid.
When he replied “$500,000,” Avery told him to take the job.
He then welcomed the award’s first announcer, Jennifer Hudson, onto the stage.
