SAN FRANCISCO – Four-time NBA Champion Stephen Curry is partially dislocated his left shoulder and there is no immediate timetable for his return to the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors.
The team announced Thursday that Curry underwent an MRI examination in Philadelphia – where the Warriors competed on Friday – and it shows the extent of the damage he suffered in Wednesday’s 125-119 loss. in Indiana.
“Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed that Curry had dislocated his left shoulder,” a Warriors statement said. “A timetable for his return will be provided in the coming days.”
Subluxation is defined as partial or incomplete dislocation of a joint.
Curry, Player of the Year in the NBA Finals last June, picked up the injury at 2:04 in the third inning trying to take the ball away from Indiana’s Jalen Smith as he ran into the box.
Curry held his shoulder until leaving the game a moment later and the 34-year-old guard was ushered into the locker room.
ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported on Thursday that Curry will be out for “several weeks” through injury.
Despite leaving early, Curry ended the game with a top record of 38 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds against the Pacers. He scored 27 points over two innings, half of the Warriors’ first-half total as they led 74-54, and finished with his 250th career 30-point record.
Golden State, seeking a fifth NBA title in nine seasons, fell 14-15 and 2-12 along the way.
Curry has averaged 30 points a game this season and hit a 50% rate from the ring. He also averaged 6.8 assists and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Losing Curry for any length of time would be a major setback for the Warriors, coach Steve Kerr said after Wednesday’s loss.
“Perhaps it will be more difficult if Steph is absent for a while. If he goes out, it’s definitely going to be more difficult,” Kerr said. “But you have to persevere, keep playing and keep fighting.”
Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins, who has missed Golden State’s past five games, was reevaluated on Thursday and allowed to return to training with the team. His return to play will be determined by his continued progress.
The Warriors added defender Ryan Rollins and midfielder James Wiseman to the roster from their development team on Thursday.
