It happened so long ago, and the space is now so dominated by two games that it’s almost impossible to remember how things could have turned out any other way, but for a short period of time, the MOBA genre — basically any and every game that is copying Warcraft III’s Dota map—As a war zone.
For those who weren’t around at the time, I’m special talk about the early 2010s. Sure, League of Legends and Valve’s Dota 2 it’s huge even then, but there’s also space for other games to try and put them inand one of the earliest and most dangerous challenges is Heroes Of Newerthwas first released in 2010 as a full priced game but was quickly re-released a year later to match its competitor’s free-to-play model (then go even than free in 2012).
HONOR actually launched its beta at the same time as Laugh out loudbut while Riot’s game will go on to be one of the biggest in the history of video games, Heroes Of Newerthharder to play and has one of the worst communities this pastime has ever seen, simply cannot keep up. I’ll be honest here and say I thought it closed years ago, it’s been a long time since I’ve heard anything about it, but it turns out there were enough fans around to keep for the game to continue in 2022.
But not anymore. Newerth’s servers were shut down for the last time today, ending more than a decade of operation. Anyone who visits the game’s website now receives a simple splash message that says “HON is now OFFICIALLY CLOSED. THANKS FOR PLAYING!” The remaining fans left their gratitude on the game’s forums—which one is still up?-Speak things like “II was sad when I realized that the game I spent half of my life with (I am 26 years old now) is gone“And “damn DOTA”.
