House of the Dragon Team Talks About the Unexpected, Game of Thrones – The Hollywood Reporter

Rear group Dragon’s HouseHBO coming soon Game of Thrones prequel, there’s a lot to be said about what fans can expect.

During their panel Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H, stars included Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Paddy Considine, along with Enthusiastic author George RR Martin, whose book was the basis for the project, spoke to the crowd about what’s in store when the highly anticipated series launches on August 21.

The series focuses on the conflict in Westeros dating back 150 years before the original series, and executive producer Ryan Condal explained that the series started when the Targaryens were thriving and had 17 dragons, which is the amount. the most they will have. “That was right before the flowers started to bloom,” he said.

Martin said that he watched nine of the 10 episodes from the first season and felt a lot of emotions. “It was quite interesting,” he shared. “You’re always nervous at first because of these books, these characters are like my kids.”

He continued, “I’ve been very lucky here. I think Ryan has done a great job adapting the books – so far – and our cast here is amazing. “

Paddy Considine, who plays King Viserys, said that his character would have a hard time maintaining stability, despite his best efforts. “He’s a nice guy trying to keep peace in the kingdom,” Considine said, teasing a secret Viserys was hiding. “There is a great tragedy in it. He loves his family and cares about his place, but he’s carrying something else.”

Smith promises that things will get tense between his character, Prince Daemon Targaryen, and his brother, Viserys. “It’s a complicated relationship,” the actor said. “Everything is about his brother to Daemon.”

Steve Toussaint portrays Lord Corlys Velaryon, whom he describes as a self-made man. “By the time we met him, he was a man of great wealth in his adventures,” he said.

Not all movies take place in front of the camera. Fabien Frankel, who plays swordsman Ser Criston Cole, admitted to coming into contact with Smith during his early travels. “Our first practice session with Matt, I hit him in the face with a sword,” he said. Smith concurred and added, “The scar is pretty good.”

Emma D’Arcy, who plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, said her character is fueled by fire. “I think she’s powered by those old Targaryens,” she teased.

Cooke admitted that viewers can expect her character, Lady Alicent Hightower, to be the show’s villain, but she said things won’t be so simple and the show showcases Alicent at her age. Young enough gives her a lot to explore. “She is very multifaceted – there are so many layers to her,” the actress said. “I have never had the freedom to create a complete human being like this before.”

This led Martin to point out that any aspect of good and evil would be handled delicately. “We won’t have anyone called the Evil Lord or the Brutal Gentleman,” he quipped. “But there is certainly evil. I’ve always believed that the most interesting characters are the great ones. “

When asked by a fan if he would make a cameo appearance, Martin implied that he was too busy writing his last book. A Song of Ice and Fire. “There is this book that I am writing – a bit late,” he said.

Toussaint deals with dealing with any criticism of a person of color that comes into this world. “It was a problem they had to deal with,” the actor confidently says of any haters. “I don’t have to.”

Cooke emphasized that the team has worked so hard on the show that she hopes that it can live up to fan expectations. “We are very grateful for what has come before and we just hope this has the same legacy,” she said. “I just hope you like it.”
