Meghan Markle joins royal family with grace today to honor the life of Queen Elizabeth II at her state funeral. And like Kate Middleton and Princess CharlotteMeghan used her outfit accessories to pay tribute to the late monarch.
Meghan notably wore pearl and diamond drop earrings that the Queen gave her during their first joint engagement in 2018. As Daily women’s clothing pointed out, wearing pearls is a royal mourning tradition dating back to Queen Victoria. Pearls are seen as symbols of purity and tears. Meghan paired her pearl and diamond earrings today with a black Stella McCartney cape dress and a Stephen Jones wide-brimmed hat.
Meghan too wear earrings to honor the Queen during the coffin procession last Wednesday.
Meghan spoke about her relationship with the Queen and how the late monarch treated her during their first engagement together, where the earrings were donated, in her March 2021 interview with Oprah.
“For example, the queen has always been great to me,” Meghan said afterwards. “I mean, we had one of the first joint collaborations together. She asked me to join her, and I took the train. And we had breakfast together that morning and she gave me a beautiful gift and I really enjoyed being with her, and I knew we were in the car — Yes, she gave I got some nice pearl earrings and a matching necklace — and we were in the car going between skirmishes. And she had a blanket over her knees, to keep warm and it was cold and she was like, Meghan, come on, and put it on my knees. “
