Aged 9 and 7, Prince George and Princess Charlotte were old enough to attend the Queen’s state funeral today, and Kate Middleton and Prince William’s two oldest people joined the procession and displayed remarkable ornamentation during a very solemn royal event. The two arrived with their mother Kate, with Charlotte holding Kate’s hand as the family entered Westminster Abbey.
Charlotte paired with her mother in a black brimmed hat and pleated skirt. Charlotte’s outfit holds a bit of homage but is touching to the Queen, with Charlotte wearing a diamond horseshoe brooch in honor of the Queen’s love of horses. The Queen actually gave Charlotte the brooch, like People shown. In addition, the store said it was the first time Charlotte wore an important piece of jewelry at a royal event alongside a hat, which is customary for British women to wear at formal events.
The newspaper reported that Kate and William carefully spent their time deciding whether George and Charlotte should attend the procession and funeral. They ultimately chose to let them come because they attended Prince Philip’s funeral last year.
Charlotte and George’s younger brother, Prince Louis, did not attend the funeral because he was only four years old. While, like Hi! Reportedly, there is no official rule prohibiting children under a certain age from attending, their parents can decide if they can handle royal events of this kind. Louis also did not attend Prince Philip’s funeral last year, making his absence today all the more unsurprising.
Kate talks about how her children coped with the news of the Queen’s death while in Windsor Palace for a Stroll last Saturday. “It was all very extraordinary,” she said. “I was really sad when I heard about it and Louis said, ‘Mom, don’t worry, because Gan Gan is with Grandpa now.'”
