How to clean your TV screen without damaging it

HHave you ever curled up on the couch or in bed, streaming your favorite show, only to realize that there are big smudges on your dusty TV screen? Yes, we’ve all been there at one point or another. As such, we can all stand in front of our TV and wonder how to erase it. With that in mind, we chatted with cleaning expert and COO at The Cleaning Authority Leanne Stapf to learn how to clean TV screens once and for all. Keep reading for her top tips.

The best way to clean the TV screen

Even if you use the super-soft Viva Signature Towels — literally designed to act like cloth — like me, Stapf says it’s best to use a reusable microfiber cloth when wiping. TVs, as they can gently remove any particles on the screen while also removing fingerprints.

She explains: “The microfibers avoid scratching the screen when cleaning and don’t leave any lint behind. “Other fabrics or towels, such as paper towels or rags, are too rough, which can leave scratches that can detract from the quality of the screen.”

When cleaning the TV, you may find it boring, don’t rush it. “It’s best to move the fabric gently and slowly in an up-down or left-to-right motion,” says Stapf. “A circular motion can leave marks on the screen.”

Can I use Windex to clean my TV screen?

While a dry microfiber towel can work well for removing dust and light fingerprints, there are certainly times when smudges and smudges need a little extra TLC to tackle. Even though the TV has a glass screen, Stapf emphasizes not using Windex when cleaning your TV.

“Cleaning products like Windex can contain harsh chemicals that can harm screens,” she says. “Given the sensitivity of the latest screen technology, a dry cleaning method would be the best.”

What should I use to clean my TV screen?

If you still need a little extra stain removal action, don’t stock your cleaning cabinet with laptop screen cleaners, like Insignia Screen Cleaner, WHOOSH! Screen Cleaner or EVEO Screen Cleaning Spray—all come with a microfiber cloth.

When cleaning your TV, Stapf says it’s important not to oversaturate your screen. The best way to do so is to dab the cleaner on a cloth and then wipe the screen clean. “Do not spray water directly on the screen,” she insisted.

And remember…

Most TVs have cleaning instructions. Therefore, you should read the brochure that came with your new monitor to see if it has any features that may not work well with spray cleaners. All in all, dry cleaning is always fair game.
