Huxley Stakes: Another Ryan Moore master of Solid Stone wins Chester Group Two for Sir Michael Stoute | Racing news
Ryan Moore provided another tactical skill to propel Solid Stone to success in the Group of Two Huxley Stakes, helping it to a seventh win of the week at Chester.
The six-year-old was a comfortable three-stage winner in Group Two for Sir Michael Stoute but that doesn’t tell the whole story of the race.
Moore galvanized his mount in the early stages, pushing him up to challenge frontrunners Majestic Dawn and Rob Hornby before falling behind his opponent.
That in turn lights up the Majestic Dawn, using up too much energy while giving the Solid Stone a perfect spot in the race.
And while Frankie Dettori’s Megallan was struggling in the background, Moore quickly dashed off for the spoils with definite outsider Lad second in second.
That win took Moore’s Chester to seven for the week, with Sky Sports Racing analyst Kevin Blake saying: “Ryan Moore is playing chess this week – the other players are playing checkers!
“It looked like Majestic Dawn would easily take the lead but when Moore knocked out Solid Stone in the first place, he wanted to get into his zone and get him through the race before getting into the box seat.
“It’s the high-level stuff. He’s been put on an advanced class all week – it’s the magic stuff.”
Before that, Baryshnikov and Connor Beasley crossed from the back of the pitch to knock out Deepbridge Handicap in good style for coach David Barron.
Despite the need to navigate through traffic, he crept through a stretch to overtake the already-ready winner from Cap Francais in second and Restorer in third.
Winning rider Beasley said after the race: “You need all the luck in the world to get the spin here on a horse like him but they came at the right time and he delivered brilliantly. .
“He’s a horse guy who does everything in his stride and he’s got a lot of ability. Hopefully he’s on an upward path and there’s plenty of fun to be had during the off-season. this.”
Red Mirage continues to pave the way for the mainland
The opening ICM Stellar Sports Earl Grosvenor handicap was played in Red Mirage for David Probert and Andrew Balding, eliminating Boosala and Ryan Moore’s late charge.
The line came just as the four-year-old received the verdict by nose, with a half-long backline for Revich, who had little luck making a slick dribble for apprentice Harry Davies.
Probert said after the race: “He was quite advanced at the age of three and just lost his way but in the end he gave up on that and hoped for more to come from him.
“He seems to be a happy horse and he is moving better than ever. We were just worried about the ground going against him but it was just dry enough and he seemed to handle it well. .”
Sky Sports senior analyst Jamie Lynch also added: “This horse lost the mojo to Mark Johnston so it’s a handicap to join that top team. [Andrew Balding]. He proved it not once, but twice.
“It was the perfect case of the Chester race. One of good returns, one of position, speed and fortune for the others.”
