I Tried TikTok’s Conditioner Buns On My Oily Hair| good + good

WWhen it comes to hair trends and treatments that promise soft, shiny hair, I tend to decline. The oil glands on my scalp are overactive, and my shampooing tends to last up to three days—well, to be fair, I could do it in four, but I’ll leave a bun. naturally shiny hair (not the product) that last day. So when I heard about the “treatment dumplings” taking over TikTok, it was understandable that I was skeptical about trying it on my own hair. This trend involves applying a mask or treatment to your hair and pulling it into a bun, allowing the product to fully absorb into your hair for a day before rinsing it out.

But even a beauty editor like me is not immune to viral power. Can this work on my oily scalp and hair? To find out, I called several experts. “Everybody can benefit from getting the right treatment for their hair,” says Adam Livermore, Oribe’s professional hairstylist and global educator. “You definitely want to know your ingredients. If you choose the wrong way to handle the situation, you can do some damage, but even if you don’t, you could miss out on a big opportunity. You have to know whether the hair needs moisturizing, repair, or both.”

Tatiana Ramos, hairstylist and national educator in Pureology, agrees with these views and has some helpful advice for those contemplating trying a therapeutic bun. She suggests: “Try it first on a day you have to clean the house or do a bunch of errands and wash it off thoroughly. “You don’t want to leave this in your hair for more than a day! It was unnecessary at the time.”

Based on the texture of my hair (oil on the scalp, heavily colored, drier at the ends and with lots of fine hair), both suggest looking for a mask or treatment that will protect and enhances color, strengthens and repairs damage, and adds softness and shine without weighing down my thinning hair. While many people on TikTok opt for link repair Olaplex recipes for their TikTok cakes, I chose the Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-tasking Deep Nourishing Mask ($41), which I know works well for recommendations of experts.

What happened when I tried the treatment bun

To start, I moisten my hair with a spray bottle and comb through to detangle. Then, I apply a quarter-sized amount of Pureology mask from the middle to the ends of my hair, where it feels the driest (I take great care to avoid touching the roots and keep the product at least 2 inches below the scalp). . After gently brushing the product in, I twisted my hair into a low bun at the nape of my neck and secured with a silk elastic. (“I always recommend using a satin hair tie or a very stretchy hair tie to keep it in place and not strain it,” says Ramos.)

Since I tend to lean more towards oily skin, I applied the mask for about 6 hours (on the slightly shorter side to treat acne). I follow with a double shampoo (which I always do, with or without buns) and a small amount of my usual conditioner. After showering, my hair is silky smooth – but I’m still not quite convinced; I have to wait and see how it dries and holds.

As I write this, three days later, my hair is holding up amazingly well. Not only are my strands soft to the touch, nourished, and silky smooth, but my scalp also responds surprisingly well—If anything, it’s the feel. less than oil since the mask (perhaps that greasiness is a sign of some severely dehydrated hair). My hair feels light and still has volume, but with the added benefit of a silky shine that I thought was simply unattainable with hair like mine.

Both experts recommend doing the treatment bun once a week or so, but I think a fortnightly maintenance is ideal for me. This method is not only highly effective but also quite luxurious, making it as comfortable to wear in public as it is in your own home.

“There’s something really cool about a hairstyle like a sleek bun that is as suitable for an evening event as it is for the sauna,” says Livermore. Happy masking!
