Jay Leno is back and feels ready to talk about his horrible accident.
As you may have heard, the Tonight’s program The vet was involved in a fire in his famous Burbank car garage – and suffered third-degree burns to his face, chest and hands. He’s lucky to have survived the “bigger than most” crash, and he knows it!
In a new interview with Peopleone of the first since he was released Grossman Burn Center Last month, he shared what it really feels like to go through that.

First, he tells the true story of what happened – which he feels is underreported. He explained that he was working on his 1907 White Steam Car. Him and you Dave Killacky trying to clear a fuel line in the undercarriage of a centuries-old car. He explained:
“With a steam car, you have gasoline, but you also have a vaporizer that is heated by a pilot light to turn water into steam.”
He asked Dave to push some air into the fuel line to unclog it, which is probably a bad idea because of where Jay is standing. He was “full of gas” as he said so, and had only time to realize how much danger he was in:
“I knew how close I was to the pilot lights and I thought ‘Uh oh.’”
Almost immediately, a spark lit the gas – and the late-night presenter – caught fire. Explaining how it feels, Jay quips:
“It feels exactly like my face is on fire.”
Seriously, for those who haven’t had a third-degree burn, he can compare it to a very severe sunburn:
“Probably like the most intense sunburn you’ll ever experience, to be fair.”
Something tells us he still plays it a bit. He’s a tough guy — and has a cool head, even when the fire burns! He knew it was much safer to close his eyes and close his windpipe:
“I’m not one to panic, but I know if I breathe in, I could burn my lungs.”
So instead, as he put it to Adam Carolla Over the weekend, he calmly told his friend:
“Dave, I’m on fire.”
His friends can understand that he is joking because of the way he speaks calmly. But he’s trying NOT to panic! Thankfully, Dave acted quickly – and suffered a slight burn on his own arm in the process. What a good friend! And faster! Jay said People:
“I was under the car for about 10 seconds before Dave pulled me out. If it takes longer than that, I could go blind and lose my eye.”
He used Dave’s work shirt to completely put out the fire — but surprisingly he didn’t think he needed to go to the hospital at first! He said he didn’t want to bother!

But when the medical staff from Burbank Fire Department When he got there, they told him he really needed the hospital. And the hospital told him he needed to go to the burn center. He drove himself to the Grossman Burn Center, but when they wanted to take him in right away, he realized his wife hadn’t heard from him — and told them he needed to go home. home and talk to her first! All so she doesn’t have to worry! Oh!
We can’t believe he actually went home first! Thankfully, he made it back to the burn center and didn’t try to ignore it! See, a big part of trying to brush it off is that he doesn’t know how bad it really is! doctor Peter Grossmanwho shares the same name as the burn center, says People it’s even worse than it looks:
“When he walked in, his burn was deeper than I expected. Jay is definitely an exception in how well he heals given the severity of the injury.”
That’s serious okay. Jay requested two skin grafts, one using skin taken from pig intestines, the other from human carcasses. And for over a week at the burn center, he didn’t ask for pain medication! Jay explains:
“Pain is a reminder that I am an idiot!”
Well, that’s fair, we guess!
While we were talking about the lessons, the accident in general reminded him how much he is loved! nightingale, his wife of 42 years, sleeps next to him every night in the hyperbaric chamber of the burn center. And the celebrities he’s met over the years have also come up with:
“[John Travolta] send me a large Italian basket, Tom Selleck send flowers and Russell Crowe called from Australia. I’ve been doing this job for a long time and it’s really touching to feel that love.”
Other silver linings? He’s back to his feet and the audience is more excited than ever to see him! He joked:
“It was like a blow to the hand of my career because it was like, ‘Let’s go see him before he burns again.’ Really happy to be back to work again.”
But just because everything is fine now doesn’t mean Jay hasn’t learned his lesson. I said:
“I know how bad it can be. But I’m fine. And I’m sure I’ll keep doing the stupid things I’ve always done. Could be a little more careful!”
So glad he was able to keep his sense of humor in all of this!
