JIT probing assassination attempt on Imran Khan stops working after suspension of its head

LAHORE: The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) investigating the November 3 gun attack on former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has ceased operations following the suspension of its leader, a police officer. senior said on Saturday.
Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was wounded in the right leg when two gunmen fired a volley of bullets at him and others standing on a container truck in the Wazirabad area, where he is leading the march against the government to pressure snap elections.
He has blamed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer for hatching a plot to assassinate him.
“JIT’s assassination investigation into the life of former prime minister Imran Khan is no longer active after the Court of Federal Service upheld the federal government’s decision to suspend police chief Lahore Ghulam Mahmood Dogar, who was its head (JIT),” a senior Punjab police officer told PTI on Saturday.
There has been a dispute between the Shehbaz Sharif government and the Punjab government where Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is in power in alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) over the appointment of Dogar as a police officer. Chief Lahore.
The official said Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi will soon nominate a new head of the JIT in the event there is no provision in the law to keep Dogar as head of the JIT.
He added that the JIT under Dogar’s direction recorded the statements of about 800 police officers and PTI workers who were present near Khan when the attack took place.
He said that the JIT also questioned arrested suspect Muhammad Naveed, who asserted that he acted alone.
Khan underwent surgery for a gunshot wound at the Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore owned by his charity and moved into Lahore’s Zaman Park residence.
Punjab police registered the FIR in connection with Khan’s assassination but made no mention of ‘high-level suspects, including the head of the ISI for whom Khan was responsible for the attack.
Khan dismissed the FIR, saying that without nominating Prime Minister Sharif, Interior Minister Sanaullah and the head of the ISI Counter Intelligence Wing, Maj-Gen Faisal in the FIR, it was just a “piece of trash”.
Punjab police said they arrested Naveed from the crime scene and he confessed to his crimes. Naveed in his confession said that he wanted to kill Khan when music was played in Azan’s time during his long march.
Indirectly blaming the powerful military establishment, Khan said: “I wonder what if I am a former prime minister of Pakistan unable to register for FIR in connection with the attack on me and other PTI workers. will happen to the common people?”
He claimed that Naveed was a trained gunman and that another gunman opened fire on him from a different direction.
