Joe Biden says G7, Nato must ‘stay together’ against Russia’s war


ELMAU CASTLE: President of the United States Joe Biden on Sunday praised German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his leadership later Russiafight against Ukraine and urged the West to unite.
“We have to stay together,” Biden told Scholz at a meeting ahead of the G7 summit in the German Alps.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had hoped that “NATO and the G7 would somehow come apart,” Biden said. “But we haven’t and we won’t.”
Biden meets his German host at picturesque Elmau Castle, where the G7 – Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States – is hosting a three-day summit due to the crisis in Ukraine dominated.
Biden praised Scholz’s leadership as the current president of the G7 at a time of turmoil in Europe due to Russia’s war and the ensuing global recession.
“I want to commend you for being as progressive as you were when you became prime minister” and “the way you have had such a big impact on the rest of Europe to move, especially in relation to Ukraine,” Biden told Scholz. .
The 79-year-old Democrat also recalled his skiing days, telling Scholz that the Alpine scenery was “beautiful”.
A senior US official said Washington has “invested a lot” in its relationship with Germany since Mr. Biden took office nearly two and a half years ago.
Their talks on Sunday were “a good opportunity to affirm the deep and longstanding relationship between our two countries. Regarding the agenda, it is expected that Russia and Ukraine will top the list, including both our close coordination on the political and diplomatic fronts,” the official said.
