Sacramento assistant Jordi Fernandez will replace Nick Nurse as coach of the Canada men’s basketball team that will compete at this summer’s World Cup, a person with knowledge of the decision said Tuesday.
Fernandez is also expected to stay on if Canada qualifies for the Paris Olympics in 2024, a person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the recruitment has not been publicly disclosed.
ESPN first reported on Fernandez’s recruitment, which was later confirmed by The Toronto Star and Sportsnet.
The nurse has a contract to coach the Canadian team until the 2024 Olympics. He was fired from his position as coach of the Toronto Raptors earlier this year and now coaches the Philadelphia 76ers.
Canada – which could have NBA champion Denver Nuggets’ Jamal Murray and Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading their roster this summer – is expected to play at least five pre-show games when the World Cup begins on August 25.
Team Canada is in Group H of the World Cup, and will meet France, Latvia and Lebanon in Jakarta, Indonesia in the opening stage of the tournament.
