On Saturday afternoon, Kate Middleton honored the late Queen Elizabeth by wearing one of her favorite pieces of jewelry to a luncheon at Buckingham Palace. The newly named Princess of Wales has been photographed wearing the Queen’s famous three-strand pearl necklace. This pair of pants is one of her favorite pieces and she wears it almost every day.
A royal source confirmed to Tonight’s reception that it was indeed the same necklace and that Kate wore it along with a pair of pearl and diamond earrings and a pearl bracelet also by Elizabeth.
The luncheon was attended by King Charles III, Camilla, the Queen and Prince William, and was held to entertain the governors of the Commonwealth of Nations. They have come in anticipation of the queen’s state funeral, which will take place on Monday, September 19. Other heads of state from around the world are expected to attend, including Emmanuel Macron, Justin Trudeau and Joe Biden.
The Queen had an extensive jewelry collection at the time of her death, although technically the crown jewels belonged to the state. Her personal collection will likely be divided among her family, though royal expert Katie Nicholl says ET the first choice will traditionally go to Queen Consort, Camilla. But it looks like Camilla passed on the pearls or they were meant for Kate.
“There is a hierarchy in all of this,” says Nicholl. “Queen Consort is, indeed, the queen’s first choice of jewelry. And then there’s the Princess of Wales, of course, Kate [Middleton]. The Duchess of Sussex is, I’m sure, going to buy some jewelry at some point, but she’s gone far beyond her caesarean order. “
It is not known how much the Queen’s private collection is worth as those items have not been publicly calculated and appraised. Queen Elizabeth also received many of her jewelry as gifts during her lifetime, attaching historical and sentimental value to them. That essentially makes the collection “priceless,” says Nicholl.
Before her grandmother-in-law died, Kate was seen wearing her jewelry, including a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings, at a gala dinner at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2015. Apparently, Elizabeth was very loves to see Kate in her jewelry.
