NEW DELHI: A machine-building division of the Russian atomic agency Rosatom, AEM-Izhora Technologyshipped a 187-ton pressurizer for unit 5 of Kudankulam nuclear power plant. This item shipped to India on April 3rd and will travel over 17,000km to its destination in Tamil Nadu. The pressure regulator is called the primary circuit device of the VVER reactor and is responsible for creating and maintaining the coolant pressure and volume. It is used to limit pressure fluctuations in transient and emergency modes. When assembled, it is about 14 m long and 3.3 m in diameter. Its capacity is 79 cubic meters and the wall thickness is 152 mm.
During the hydraulic test, the device passed the tightness test at high temperature and maximum allowable pressure of 24.7 MPa. The Kudankulam plant will consist of 6 power units with VVER-1000 type reactors with an installed capacity of 6000 MW. Phase 1, including units 1 and 2, were connected to the national grid in 2013 and 2016. Currently, the construction of nuclear units 3, 4 and 5, 6, phase 2 and phase 2 is underway. 3 of the factory is underway.
NPCIL and Rosatom finalized the reactor design and technical supervision arrangements to build phase one of KNPP in 1998, at a cost of Rs 140 billion ($2.47 billion). The total project cost for the six units is approximately Rs 1.11 trillion ($16.3 billion). The Kudankulam plant has a production life of 60 years, which can be extended for another 20 years.
The first unit offers power at a cheaper price of around Rs 3.89 per unit. The plant’s host state, Tamil Nadu, is allocated 50% (925 MW) of the generated electricity, while neighboring states share the remaining 35% — 442MW for Karnataka, 266MW for Kerala and 67MW for Puducherry. The final 15% of the generated energy is unallocated and will be added to a hub pool.
