Chot Reyes is no stranger to the bond that he has in his role as an advisor to the national mainstreaming program.
So he ensures he won’t find himself in another game while on the bench for TNT starting Sunday.
Troy Rosario hit three goals after three while Jayson Castro burst into flames in the straight as the Tropang Giga team — minus Mikey Williams — beat Magnolia, 78-72, to defend the PBA Philippine Cup title roaring out of the way. gate at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.
“You all know what’s been going on, right? With [Southeast Asian Games] loser, today I’m the most hated person in Philippine basketball,” Reyes said shortly after the season opener.
Reyes says he keeps himself busy by focusing on the tasks assigned to him. That night, it helped Tropang Giga reassert their strength against a familiar foe.
And he made it.
“Without our strongest offensive weapon, we have to rely on our defenses,” he said. “The only way we can win games is to limit the other team’s production. Fortunately, that’s what happened tonight.
“We shed blood for our points. But we were expecting this, we know we’re going to have a hard time in the long run, especially not just without Mikey. [Williams]but also Kelly [Williams] also. Williams remained in the United States as contract negotiations stalled. Kelly Williams, the big veteran, meanwhile, had to take a week off due to an undisclosed injury.

Uncompromising defense
TNT starved Magnolia by just 13 points in the third quarter, and then left with just 17 points in the success bracket, where Castro also poured 13 points out of his 16.
“We’re just making sure we’re preparing our team to play without Mikey. And, like we said, fortunately we were able to get through this,” Reyes said.
Next up for the club is Blackwater in a duel scheduled for Thursday at Antipolo City. And there, the TNT coach hopes not to be isolated from all the eyes on him.
“I completely signed out. I don’t see anything written about me. I am not on any social media. So aside from the gift of busyness, it’s the gift of silence, and I’m grateful that I’ve logged that I can do so many things,” Reyes said.
“Truly, my refuge and my source of consolation are my team, the players who continue, despite everything, to put their faith in me. In the end, like I said, all we can do after an incident like that is just get up,” he added. INQ
