Lula’s comeback: The fight to reunite Brazil

In this special issue of Inside the Americas, we’re going to Brazil, where Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is set to return to a third term as president. But while Lula may return, the country he is destined to rule is far from united behind his back.

FRANCE 24 go to Sao Paulo‘s favelas, where a young architect is changing the neighborhood she grew up in. She told us what life was like under the President Jair Bolsonaro, as well as the unprecedented Covid pandemic has left its mark on the community.

Our reporters met a pro-Bolsonaro farmer and a local congressman who defended the outgoing president’s record on climate change and deforestation. He also shared his fear for the future of the country under a Lula President.

Next, FRANCE 24 headed to Rio de Janeiro to visit one of the country’s major Protestant churches. We sat down with the pastor, a friend of Bolsonaro and an influential leader in the evangelical community.

Finally, “John Oliver of Brazil,” Gregorio Duvivier – a comedian and TV presenter – narrates how a satirist’s life was during the Bolsonaro presidency and why he thinks Lula there will be a tough job ahead.
