MANCHESTER, England-Manchester City beat defending League Cup winners Liverpool 3-2 in a thrilling match on Thursday, taking the lead three times before reaching the quarter-finals.

Defender Nathan Ake headed home the winner in the 58th minute after Mohamed Salah equalized a minute after Riyad Mahrez restored City’s advantage early in the second half.

Erling Haaland scored his 24th goal of the season in all competitions to put City ahead in the 10th minute at the Etihad Stadium but Liverpool responded in the 20th minute, when Fabio Carvalho delivered a James pass. Milner to complete a move.

It was another fast and furious matchup between the two opponents that brought the Premier League title race to a dramatic end last season and, after, Man City were the runners-up.

They will travel to Southampton in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp thought Haaland’s goal was offside and lamented that VAR technology was not used in the League Cup until the semi-finals.

“We have VAR, the referees are used to VAR. The technology is here, why shouldn’t we use it?” said the German coach.

“We worked hard, we did good things. It’s not good enough for tonight but it’s against Man City at home, it’s always going to be an extremely difficult game.”

City manager Pep Guardiola, who scored his first win over Liverpool in six games in all competitions, was pleased with the team’s performance.

“We can’t say it wasn’t a good game,” he said. “It’s not easy to keep the ball against Liverpool because they have the most difficult defensive structure I’ve faced in my career.”

Haaland looked refreshed after an extended break due to Norway’s failure to qualify for the World Cup and contributed heavily to his team’s build-up play, creating a great opportunity for Cole Palmer but the youngster stopped short. point out.

Haaland didn’t have such problems as he had the first clear chance, he split his left foot to put Kevin De Bruyne’s pass into the net.

Man City’s defense was deadlocked and Liverpool broke through their area and equalized thanks to Carvalho.

Guardiola’s side were more than likely to score again and did so shortly after half-time, when Mahrez controlled a pass from Rodri with one foot and shot the ball into the net with the other.

However, as has often been the case in recent years of the game, Liverpool dropped deep and Darwin Nunez made a breakthrough on the left flank to catch a pass and cross for Salah to cross.

However, Man City would not be outdone and took the lead in the final period, Ake headed high after De Bruyne’s attractive cross.
