Man held for Australia beach murder | India News
NEW DELHI: Based on input shared by CBI and Interpol, Delhi Police on Friday arrested a 38-year-old man accused of killing an Australian woman at a Queensland beach in 2018. The defendant has been identified as Rajwinder Singh from Moga, Punjab An Australian citizen of Indian descent, he fled Australia two days after the alleged murder of a 24-year-old Toyah Cordingleyleaving behind a wife and three young children.
After being arrested in a joint operation, Singh, who was carrying a reward of around Rs 5.5 crore (AU$ one million) and had an Interpol red notice against him, was placed in judicial custody. until November 30, extradition proceedings will be started shortly, an official said. His detailed interrogation has yet to be conducted.
In March 2021, the Australian government asked India to extradite Singh, which was approved in November of this year. On 4 November 2022, the Australian High Commissioner tweeted about the announcement of Singh’s commendation and the authorities were flooded with information. Three Queensland detectives recently traveled to India to assist the CBI and police in their search.
Delhi Police approached the court on 21st November and received an order not to be bailed against Singh under the Extradition Act. Police discovered Singh frequently changed locations and moved between Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. Finally, he is hiding in north Delhi as the heat for him ramps up in Punjab. According to a Delhi Police spokesman, Singh was arrested around 6am on 25 November near GT Karnal Road. He changed his appearance by growing a beard.
Cordingley, the victim, was a pharmacy worker walking her dog on Queensland’s Wangetti beach when she was killed on October 21, 2018. Police described the killing as a “personal attack.” and intimate”. She has obvious and severe wounds on her body, half found when buried. The victim was strangled and found naked, but police did not confirm whether this was a sex offender. Sources said police will likely investigate whether Singh was involved in any other incidents as several other incidents have been reported at the same beach over the years.
