McDonald’s starts reopening restaurants in Ukraine this week

Three McDonald’s restaurants will reopen in Kyiv this week, a company spokesman said on Monday, a commitment chain made last month to get employees back to work even as the war continues.

On Tuesday, restaurants in Kyiv will open their doors exclusively for delivery, Alesya Mudzhyri, McDonald’s Ukraine head of communications, wrote in a post on Facebook, with expanded safety protocols to keep employees safe. All 109 McDonald’s restaurants in Ukraine closed after the Russian invasion in February.

McDonald’s is making a commitment to restore a “small but important sense of normalcy,” which it first demonstrated in August when its fast-food franchise shared its plans to open a restaurant. At the time, Paul Pomroy, vice president of international operations, said employees had expressed a “strong desire” to return to work after many fled the country and others. join the army. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the next two months, McDonald’s restaurants in Kyiv and western Ukraine will reopen. In October, restaurants that reopen will be able to receive customers in person and through the driver’s window, Ms. Mudzhyri’s post said. Restaurants are set to stay open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. but will close during the air raid alert to give staff and customers time to seek shelter nearby.

McDonald’s has 39,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. In Russia, home to 840 restaurants, the company shut down after the invasion and sold franchises. Restaurants in Russia were bought by an oil tycoon in Siberia and reopen in June under a different name.
