Mediterranean diet can help couples overcome infertility problem

“Deciding to have children is one of the biggest decisions in life, but if things don’t go according to plan, it can be very stressful for both couples,” says Dr. Mantzioris.

“Research shows that inflammation can affect fertility in both men and women, affecting sperm quality, menstrual cycles, and implantation. So in this study, we’re looking at it.” I wanted to see how a reduced-inflammatory diet – such as the Mediterranean diet – could improve fertility.

“Encouragingly, we found consistent evidence that by following an anti-inflammatory diet – a diet that includes a lot of polyunsaturated or ‘healthy’ fats, flavonoids (such as green leafy vegetables) and a limited amount of red and processed meat – we can improve fertility.”

What is the Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet is primarily plant-based and includes whole grains, extra virgin olive oil, fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes, nuts, herbs and spices. Yogurt, cheese and lean protein sources such as fish, chicken or eggs; Red meat and processed meat are only eaten in small amounts.
