The very concept of Metal: Hellsinger captivated me from the very first note: Kill the Devil in a modern Doom-style first-person shooter to the beat of newly recorded tracks from some of the big names in the genre. rock and metal genres. Thankfully, the short demo I played at Summer Game Fest (now also available on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam) reinforced my impression that this game was really for me.

After a short tutorial, I learned that by shooting, slashing, or blowing fire from the top of my monstrous skull to the beat, I would increase my multiplier. That multiplier is important for the final score at the end of the level. At first, I was not good at it. Slowly but surely, however, I understood it, as my attacks started to have more impact as I launched consecutive hits in perfect rhythm. Some weapons are easier to shoot to the beat than others, as I struggled to keep pace with my shotgun, while the dual pistols made me feel a bit more confident in my skills. Just like in Doom, once you deal enough damage to enemies, they’ll go into a stun, allowing you to deliver a devastating finishing blow (causing them to reduce health to replenish any enemies you hit). lost). Unlike normal attacks, which can be launched at any time, finishing blows must be performed to the beat of the music.

As I continued to dash my way through the demons, the rhythmic attack almost sent me into a flow state. Attack to the beat, dodge oncoming attacks, perform active cadence reloads, and land to clear the room for an almost second-nature feel thanks to the powerful yet enticing metal injection through my headphones. After the mechanics clicked for me and rehearsed my original FPS instincts, Metal: Hellsinger pulled me in.
