Classical composer Yannick Nézet-Séguin is among Canada’s top Grammy Award nominees this year with strong performances coming from a host of other homegrown talent.
The Montreal native has received five nominations in four classical music categories, putting him on par with Serban Ghenea, who was nominated for record of the year for his remix work on Mary J. Blige’s good morning beautiful.
Ghenea was born in Romania before he moved to Canada at a young age, continuing to build his name in the music industry where he has won 19 Grammy Awards during his career.
Nézet-Séguin nominations include best classical compendium for A concert for Ukraineand two in the opera recording category — for Aucoin: Eurydice and Blanchard: Silent fire in my bones.

Other big nominations this year include Toronto producer Boi-1da, born Matthew Samuels, who followed closely behind with four nominations, including two in the Album of the Year category for Beyonce’s Renaissance and by Kendrick Lamar Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
The musical hitmaker, who has made a name for himself creating songs with Eminem, Drake and Kardinal Offfishall, also received nominations for producer of the year, non-classical rap song and best for works on the track. Churchill Downs by Jack Harlow.
Drake has three nominations, although he has boycotted the Grammys in recent years by not submitting his own work. He still managed to get a mention in the album of the year category for his contributions to the song Boil on Beyonce’s nominated album.
The Toronto rapper also has two nominations for best rap song, one he shares with Samuels for Harlow’s song and another for his appearance on Future’s single. Wait for me.
Four-time Grammy winner Michael Buble’s latest effort higher was one of the contenders for a traditional pop vocal album, while DJ and producer Kaytranada’s threaten, with HER, ready for dance/electronic music recording. The rising Montreal star, who recently opened for Weeknd, has won two Grammys from 2021.
And Bryan Adams pocketed a nomination for So happy it hurtsin the category of best rock performance.
Fire Arcade we won recognition for best alternative music album, a vote of support from the music industry at a difficult time for the Montreal band as they headed for a tour. Lead singer Win Butler is facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied, saying all encounters have taken place between consenting adults.

Winnipeg-born mixing engineer Jesse Ray Ernster is running in the record of the year category for his work on Doja Cat’s woman.
In the category Album of the year, Adele is nominated 30 including Ghena and Shawn Everett mixers from Bragg Creek, Alta. as well as Vancouver producer Tobias Jesso Jr.
Meanwhile, Adele easy for me awarded Montreal Outstanding Film Director Xavier Dolan and Quebec producer Nancy Grant nominations for best music video.
In the category of best musical film, Justin Bieber earned a nomination along with the team behind him. Our world concert series, while Neil Young became a candidate for Band A Brotherhood A Barna documentary that follows the recording of the album Neil Young & Crazy Horse barn.
And the creators have come together on a project to celebrate the late legendary Toronto pianist Glenn Gould, who won a Grammy. The Goldberg Variations – Complete unreleased 1981 studio version selected for the best historical album.
The 65th Grammy Awards will be hosted by Trevor Noah and broadcast on February 5 on Citytv and CBS.
