BANGKOK: A court in Myanmar on Friday sentenced the country’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi up to three years in prison after finding her guilty of electoral fraud.
The ruling adds to the 17 years she is serving in prison for other offences.
It also promotes the existence of Suu Kyi National League for Democracy party following apparent government threats to dissolve it before a new election that the military has promised will take place in 2023.
Ms. Suu Kyi’s party won the 2020 general election. The military took power from Suu Kyi’s elected government on February 1, 2021, saying it acted because of alleged fraud. voters on a large scale. Independent election observers found no major anomalies.
Two senior members of Suu Kyi’s former government were accomplices in the case and also received three years in prison.
