Nintendo Switch Sports Preview – Victory Lap

Wii Sports has cemented the power of motion control gaming and made Nintendo’s seventh-generation home console an instant hit (no wonder the jailbroken animated sports simulator ours Top 25 Wii Games). And while Follow the resort commercial and critical success, the magic of its predecessor was unmatched. Fast-forward 16 years and the debut of Switch Sports is finally here. I’ve tried the activities (old and new) scattered throughout Spocco Square, and here are my thoughts on each one.

Bowling

Look, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. I didn’t notice any significant difference between the Switch and Wii Sports’ Bowling, and perceptively that was probably the right decision. Bowling has been an almost perfect activity. Rolling the ball with the Joy-Con feels as natural and simple as possible. You still need to aim correctly, but those adjustments are made appropriately before swiping. What caught my attention was the promise of 16-player knockout PvP matches that functioned like battle royale. That would certainly spice up Bowling’s catalytic loop.

Soccer

Inside, I am most suspicious of Football. Recent Switch Sports trailers introduced the foot strap accessory, an ambitious feature that helps monitor foot movements so kicks feel intuitive. While it took me some time to get used to and it won’t be fully deployed on launch day (update is expected for summer), the footpad Joy-Con is surprisingly refreshing. Static Football modes such as the “penalty shootout” action are ideal for kicking the ball in quick succession without fatigue. But when the entire Ballpark is put to use, things are likely to get busier and more demanding. For my practical experience, I used two Joy-Cons to shoot the ball in various directions and heights. The diving header always makes me smile, when my Sports Friend sees their whole body, first, at the ball. FIFA-inspired celebrations after a goal are also a nice touch of the ball.

Tennis

Tennis, like Bowling, is a Wii Sports phenomenon. Tight controls combined with cheerful Mii animations have reduced the stakes and brought joy to the casual Nintendo fan. That’s not to say there isn’t room for skill-based gameplay. Switch Sports’ Tennis is more similar on a mechanical level, but the color-coded markings and small but significant tweaks to the game’s physics add to the strategic quality. For example, purple streaked balls (Supercharged) have power and speed, forcing players to hone their reaction time to get balls of equal power or make projectiles fly. weakly flew up into the sky. Matches now feel a bit more intense as the direction you swing your Joy-Con determines the path of the ball – sorry, you can’t just toss the racket around willy-nilly for optimal results. I loved Wii Tennis back in the day and am pleased to announce that Switch Tennis is just as enjoyable.

Volleyball

Volleyball is one of the activities that Switch Sports participates in the most. Serves, collisions, sets, spikes, and blocks require different but uncomplicated movements. I enjoyed raising my Joy-Con to see my avatar jump and then swiping down at the right moment to trigger the spike. Similarly, blocks require you to predict your opponent’s movements and meet mid-air at the grid. The nature of these disparate actions favors teamwork. A player will always have to set up a big game by placing their hands above their head, so communication is key to success. Unlike Tennis, in Volleyball there is no “carry” and players who want to join in with family/friends will appreciate that.

Chambara

Like Swordplay in the Resort and Boxing in the original game, Chambara is the latest iteration of the series’ longtime “workout” sport. Get ready to sweat, as slashing different types of swords requires more than a simple risky stroke. You will twist and turn, Joy-Con gripping, to land. When you’re having trouble getting knocked down, hold down the ZR button while positioning your weapon of choice vertically, horizontally, and diagonally to guard against attacks. I only got a chance to play with the default weapon, but the dual swords and charged swords introduce a new level of frenzy that is found and polished to basic slices. Chambara rewards players who intentionally defend and pass, so if you’re planning to climb the leaderboards later this month, make sure your decisions are well thought out and considered, just like like any good fighter.

Badminton

Badminton can be like a miniature, 1v1 version of Tennis, albeit with gravity-defying shuttlecocks. However, this welcoming of newcomers to the Nintendo Sports category forced me to increase my patience and timing. Super-charged visits are still a threat. However, the combination of your shots (backhand, forehand, drop, etc.) can determine whether your Sports Friend or Mii can keep up with the action in a split second or go down. down the field from exhaustion. Badminton is my favorite sport out of six – a Nintendo rep and I played a single game in 20 minutes! That’s because rallies take place frequently in Badminton, so the matches provide a special sense of competition and excitement. I can’t wait to see how this promising new game mode evolves in the ranked playlist.

Nintendo Sports is returning with the lovely, vibrant aesthetic you remember from 2006. The new Spocco Square venue sparkles under the tropical sun, palm trees standing proudly among six sports arenas . Responsive Joy-Cons feature brings a variety of fun to life and Sportsmate/Mii customization will be a great motivator for players to crush their favorite playlists alone or online. I left the preview event impressed with what I sampled. Golf scheduled in the fall, and a baseball announcement – please inform about baseball, Nintendo – will be the sweet cherry at the top. In any case, Nintendo Switch Sports could just be the triumphant re-emergence of Wii Sports when it drops on April 29.
