Normatec 3 compression boots can give you a massage after every workout

Who doesn’t love a sports massage after a tough workout? For most of us, that’s not a realistic possibility, but Normalec 3 legs start word compression Hyperice offers a massage experience without the need for a masseuse – at least for your feet.

Beautiful design and easy to use interface

These boots look intimidating at first, but they couldn’t be easier to use. Simply slip your feet in and pull them up, hook the hose and let the magic happen via the main control unit (you can also use the Hyperice app as a remote). All hardware weighs just 3.2 pounds, the lightest of any compression boot I’ve used (for comparison, Therabody’s RecoveryAir JetBoots$899, weighs just over 12 pounds, while Rapid .’s ReBoot System, $645, weighs about 11 pounds). And these provide 11% less weight than the previous iteration of the Normatec (also priced at $1,200).

These shoes take about a minute to fully fill, and you can clearly feel the air pressure (between 30 mmHg at 1 and 100 mmHg at 7) moving up your foot through the five chambers. or different air area from your foot to your upper step. It feels like someone is squeezing each area rhythmically before the boots quickly deflate back – most other boots, including the two mentioned above, have four compartments. It’s like taking off a sweaty sports bra after a workout – the release feels great.

The Normatec 3 Legs remote is simple and straightforward, making it easy to control your experience, choose where you want to apply pressure, and control the intensity of your massage.

There are only six buttons on the main unit: one for attachment selection (the boots are for your feet, but you can also buy sleeves and side sleeves); one for pressure level; a so-called ZoneBoost, which adds 60 seconds of massage time and 10 mmHg of pressure to one of the five available zones of the warm-up to alleviate any particularly sore areas; one to adjust the amount of time, in increments of 15 minutes to an hour; plus start/stop and on/off buttons. I didn’t notice a big difference using ZoneBoost, but because I like it really deep sports massage, I still feel comfortable with up to 7 degree compression (those who are more sensitive to pressure may prefer lower/medium level).

Good customization and personalization

Obviously, you can choose whatever settings you want on the main unit. You can also control those in the Bluetooth connected Hyperice App. But the app is primarily designed to infer how to use these boots (and other pieces of Hyperice technology like Hypervolt 2 or Hyperice X). In it you can find pre-designed routines of different lengths designed to enhance post-workout recovery, improve your sleep, pre-workout leg activation, etc.

For example, on a Saturday, I opted in for a 45-minute “post-run recovery” after a 14-mile run because it’s designed to strengthen zone 3, hitting the upper calves and calves. lower zone (most pre-programmed routines start at level 2 or 3, you can adjust the intensity more or less; just know that when you adjust the pressure, the device will automatically pause). stop and you have to resume your session manually). One of the best recent developments in compression boots is portability – and as long as the Normatec 3 main controller is charged, you can take these boots anywhere, such as the gym. or a specific event. Hyperice has increased battery life by 50% in this iteration, so even at the highest intensity settings you should get three hours of battery life.

The Normalec 3 is driven by these bulky tubes, making it a bit difficult to put the laptop on your knee during your session.  It's better to just lie back and focus on recovering.

The problem is, even without the hassle of plugging them into a wall outlet, the hoses on the Normatec 3 are extremely unwieldy. I want to use my computer while sitting in my boots for longer periods of time, and I can’t find a good way to get the tube out of my way while balancing my laptop on top of the boot.

I’ve used Therabody boots in the past, with no hoses or connections; you charge each individually, and the controls are built right into the starter. While the technology is very similar between both boots, I personally prefer to travel with Therabody shoes (despite their added weight) due to the lack of any externals.

For those looking to bounce back as they work out, compression boots can be a game changer in getting you back from tough workouts. The Normatec 3 Legs system is certainly still an investment, but they are now more competitively priced than similar products and feature significant improvements over the much more expensive iteration that preceded it (and they significantly cheaper than having a masseuse on speed dial). As long as you’re okay with bulky tubes, these lightweight compression boots can give you an edge when preparing for and recovering from intense workouts.
