North Korea says it has tested a “high-thrust solid-fuel engine” to develop a new strategic weapon under the direction of leader Kim Jong Un, state media reported on Friday.
North Korea’s official news agency KCNA said the test conducted on Thursday at the Sohae satellite launch site demonstrated the reliability and stability of the engine, providing “assurance for the development of a new type of strategic weapon system”.
According to KCNA, Kim expressed “expectations that another new type of strategic weapon will be built in the shortest possible time”.
The test took place while the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi was in Seoul for talks with South Korean officials in which he vowed to make every effort to stop North Korea’s nuclear program. .
North Korea has conducted an unprecedented number of missile tests this year, including an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the US mainland.
