India needs to focus on garment manufacturing: Arvind Ltd official

Kolkata: India needs to focus on skin manufacturing and diversifying products in the field of textiles, an officer of a leading textile enterprise Arvind Co., Ltd said on Thursday. The government also needs to encourage apparel manufacturers by expanding PLI diagram was given to several other areas, the company’s chief executive officer Kulin Lalbhai speak.

Production Linked Incentives (PLI) programs for 13 key sectors are designed to create national manufacturing champions and create employment opportunities for the country’s youth.

Virtual speaking at a session hosted by MCCI here, lalbhai “India is good at fabric production but not good at garment manufacturing. The country needs to focus on garment production to move up the value chain where they have to be encouraged,” he said.

He said India has a thriving textile industry with a domestic market size of $100 billion and growing at a rate of 8% per year.

“This presents a good opportunity for textile companies. There is also a need to diversify from cotton textiles to man-made fibers (MMFs) that the world is moving towards,” Lalbhai said.

The company official said the domestic market needs to develop because it is an “interesting roadmap for the textile industry”.

As for the question, Lalbhai said: “I don’t see any Indian brands becoming global ‘aspirational’ brands in the near future. Aspirational brands all originate in developed economies. The most important thing is that the Indian brands have to be relevant in the country.”
